Samuel

This is Samuel, a sweet young bulldog that we pulled from a high kill shelter in Cordell, Georgia. When I pulled him I was told that he was heartworm negative. It was soon discovered that he was heartworm positive. This complicates thing hugely, as we do not transport heartworm postive dogs into the state.

Samuel was moved to a boarding facility as I tried to now transition what was to be a fairly uncomplicated rescue, to a long term and costly project. He would have to be on Doxy for a month and then treated for HW, then sent to Lynit, our foster, to recover for several months. Samuel was to go for HW treatment with Dr. Thomas on next Tuesday.

Instead, Samuel is dead. He was apparently not feeling well yesterday. Instead of calling me and problem solving the best course of action, he was taken to someone’s office for “observation”. By the time I was called it was 4:30 my time and he was critical. He died at the vet clinic shortly after arrival, bleeding from his nose and mouth. We are sickened by this on the heels of losing Betty.

This particular pull was not proper from the start. It went into the ditch at every turn, from missed transport, to no foster space to no drivers to no vet availability to this. As with Betty, this boy would have died a faster death by injection than the death he faced yesterday. He will never come to Vermont or know true freedom. We failed him miserably.
