Hefty – Alaska’s beautiful bulldog

This past winter I found two English Bulldogs on the internet being sold. They were in Alaska but what is a few miles here or there? Well if it is winter, a lot and if the location is Alaska….a lot more. These dogs were being used for breeding and lived in a tin shed with a space heater.

A caring woman had bought the dogs from the breeder to save them but then could not keep them. I contacted her and she surrendered them to us. Now for plan c. I contacted a rescue in Anchorage Alaska that agreed to find placements for them. Pete and his family were chosen for “Hefty.”

Pete has become a very caring and loyal supporter of the rescue. When I post a rant about a really tough week or two or three like I just had, Pete sends me notes of encouragement and reminds me that the dogs that leave our hands and go to their forever homes are more than just dogs. They are amazing living beings that compete a family. They fill holes that we may not even know are there. They make us laugh on our worst days and cry when they are having a health crisis. The joy that they bring us ultimately outweighs the pain when they leave us.

How many people adopt a senior? Not many but those that do are really special. Pete and his family are just those kind of people. Hefty has arthritis. He is 11 years old. Pete carries him or wheels him and does not waste time thinking about his age or time with them. They just savor it. Thank you for the pictures and updates and financial support and kind words. On my worst weeks they keep me going. We love you and that Hefty boy!
